Course Outline

First Session: The first session introduces procurement, its importance, supplier relationships, the sourcing process, and the concept of value-based sourcing. In the second half, we will explore value-risk mapping, explaining why categorizing suppliers and adopting distinct strategies for each group is crucial. We will also discuss when and why outsourcing is beneficial. Finally, we will address price volatility and supply chain variability, examining how to structure contracts to tackle these challenges.

Second Session: The second session focuses primarily on optimizing procurement activities and balancing the trade-off between purchase costs and service levels. Participants will complete a take-home exercise using optimization techniques and linear programming to develop minimum cost models while considering service levels. The modeling will also incorporate various product offerings, such as standard bids, minimum volume bids, and volume discounts. This session requires extensive use of Microsoft Excel to build and optimize these models, offering participants valuable insights into the trade-offs involved in selecting an offer.

Third Session: The third session concentrates on supply chain coordination, addressing problems arising from demand variability and information sharing gaps among supply chain partners. In an environment characterized by uncertainty, procurement and supply chain managers must minimize information delays that contribute to the bullwhip effect.

In this critical session, we will examine the causes of the bullwhip effect, assess its impact on the supply chain, and explore how managers can mitigate these risks among partners.

Finally, in the second half of the session, we will analyze the uncertainty inherent in customer demand, develop simulation models to replicate this uncertainty, and create solutions to address it. This session will provide participants with profound insights into how trust can maximize revenue for supply chain partners.
